Standby — or "vampire" — power runs 5–10% of a typical home's electricity use, and the U.S. Department of Energy pegs the always-on cost at roughly $100–$200 a year per household (LBNL). What this calculator does

Almost every electronic device in a modern home keeps sipping power after you think you’ve turned it off. The cable box stays warm so it can boot instantly. The TV listens for the remote. The microwave lights a clock. None of it is much on its own, but it runs every hour of every day, and it adds up to a line item on your bill that buys you nothing.

This tool tallies that always-on draw across your devices, converts the watts into kilowatt-hours, and prices it at your electricity rate — so the invisible load becomes a number you can act on.

How to use it

  • Start with the defaults. The list is pre-loaded with a typical household’s standby devices and representative watt figures from LBNL’s standby-power research.
  • Edit any row. Change the name, the standby wattage, how many you own, and how many hours a day it sits idle. Remove what you don’t have; use “Add a device” for what you do.
  • Set your rate. Enter your price per kWh, and optionally your monthly bill to see standby power as a percentage of what you actually pay.
  • For real precision, put a $15 plug-in power meter between a device and the outlet, read the standby watts, and type them in. Reality often beats the spec sheet.

The formula, in plain English

Standby cost is the same energy equation as everything else on your bill — watts, times hours, times price — summed over every device:

A device drawing a steady 25 watts around the clock burns 25 × 24 × 365 ÷ 1000 ≈ 219 kWh a year — about $39 at $0.18/kWh, for a box that’s “off.” Stack a few of those and you see why the total lands in the $100–$200 range the DOE cites.

Why it’s worth ten minutes

Standby power is one of the few household costs you can cut to nearly zero without sacrificing anything you’d notice. LBNL’s research consistently finds it makes up 5–10% of residential electricity — money spent keeping clocks lit and radios warm. Find the two or three worst offenders and you’ve recovered most of the waste in an afternoon.

How to kill phantom load

  • Put your TV, console, and AV gear on one smart power strip or smart plug and cut it on a schedule or with a single tap.
  • Turn off “instant-on” and “quick start” modes on game consoles and TVs — they’re the difference between ~1W and 10–15W of constant draw.
  • Unplug chargers, the spare fridge, and seasonal electronics when they’re idle for weeks at a time.
  • Leave genuinely necessary always-on gear — your router, a medical device — alone, and focus on the entertainment cluster where the waste concentrates.
